Glossary
Artistic Methodology
Protocol Art means an artistic approach developed by Holly Herndon and Mat Dryhurst that treats the design of technological systems and their underlying rules as the artwork itself. Rather than just creating content within established platforms, protocol artists shape how technology functions, who benefits from it, and how participants interact with it. Examples include Holly+ (an AI voice model with built-in consent and revenue sharing) and Spawning (tools allowing artists to control how their work is used in AI training). Protocol art shifts artistic intervention "upstream" to the level of system design, creating ethical frameworks that influence all subsequent creative production.
Core Concepts
SEED ~ Dynamic NFT
means a living, evolving digital botanical artwork that responds to collective community activity and environmental data. Each Seed is owned by a Seed Steward and transforms based on community contributions to verified regenerative projects. The artwork's morphology evolves as participants engage with its associated ecosystem projects, creating a unique visual narrative of collective environmental impact.
SNAPSHOT ~ Static NFT
means a permanent capture of a specific evolutionary moment in a Seed's development. This represents an individual conservation contribution by Community Members.
SEEDBED ECOSYSEM
means the curated collection of verified regenerative initiatives that form a Seed's "DNA." Initially comprising 4 projects selected by the Seed Steward from a curated pool of 8 verified regenerative initiatives, this ecosystem expands over time as the art project progresses.
TOKEN MEMORY
means the memory architecture that preserves the historical record of ecological interactions and environmental contributions that have shaped a Seed's morphological development. TokenMemory ensures that each botanical composition maintains a complete record of its unique developmental pathway, creating unrepeatable morphological narratives that reflect specific conservation choices and collective stewardship actions.
Key Actors
SEED STEWARD
means a collector who acquires an artist-created Seed from a gallery that continuously evolves based on community engagement.
ARTIST
means CROSSLUCID, the instigator and author of the artwork who maintains ongoing responsibility for ecosystem governance including creating new seeds, co-curating verified projects with trusted organizations, ideating exhibitions and contexts, co-promoting the work, ensuring proper fund distribution, and handling further developmental needs to keep the project alive.
COMMUNITY MEMBER
means an individual who is part of the Pollinator Community who nurtures the botanical compositions through financial contributions to specific regenerative projects. Their donations create Snapshot NFTs while simultaneously influencing the Seed's morphological development and funding allocation.
CREATOR CYCLE MEMBER
means an individual, entity or community that is integral to the creation of the work either by supplying inspiration and context for the artwork, and/or contributing informal or invisible labour to the artwork, and/or participating in the R&D phase and producing/maintaining the artwork.
GALLERY
means a cultural institution/foundation that offers artist-created Seeds to potential Seed Stewards, displays the evolving Seeds, and facilitates visitor interactions. Digital Snapshots can be purchased either in galleries or institutions that host the project, or online via the app in a decentralized manner.
TRUSTED ORGANISATION
means a verified entity such as Regen Network or ArtEcology that collaborates with artists to co-curate and validate the regenerative initiatives forming the project pool from which Stewards select their Seed's DNA.
System Architecture and Technology
MORPHOLOGICAL ART ENGINE
means the bespoke advanced technical system developed by CROSSLUCID that translates environmental data into visual transformations of the Seed artworks. Powered by a bespoke generative AI pipeline and drawing from plant biology principles, this engine processes ecological metadata to trigger specific morphological responses—influencing root structures, branching patterns, coloration, and growth cycles based on verified regenerative project interactions, ensuring each Seed develops along unique evolutionary pathways.
DYNAMIC POOL
means a collective mechanism through which contributions are gathered and distributed on the blockchain to support various regenerative initiatives within the Seedbed Ecosystem. This transparent fund distribution system ensures that proceeds from Snapshot Blooms are properly allocated among ecosystem participants according to the established distribution model. The blockchain-based architecture maintains accountability while directing resources to Creator Circle Members, Trusted Organizations, and the verified regenerative projects that form each Seed's DNA
WAY OF FLOWERS dApp
means the digital application through which Community Members can interact with the Way of Flowers project and support verified regenerative projects connected to specific Seeds. This app will later be enhanced to include a web interface and website with all Seeds and Snapshots available for visibility. The expanded ecosystem will connect all the Seeds and Snapshots and serve as an index of regenerative projects, creating a comprehensive ecosystem that tracks the complete evolution of each botanical artwork and its environmental impact while facilitating direct community participation in the growing network of conservation initiatives.
BLOOMING SCREENS
mean bespoke square displays (ca. 60x60cm) connected to the Seed and its smart contract, showcasing the constantly evolving digital botanical artwork in (almost) real time. These displays visualize the transformations generated by the Morphological Art Engine as Community Members contribute to the Seedbed Ecosystem, allowing gallery visitors to witness the living artwork's response to collective environmental impact.
